Now that you've played Guitar Hero, you might be thinking you'd like to play a real guitar? The guitar hero game is fun, but it doesn’t teach you to play the guitar. You might be thinking you would like to become a guitar player and get that same rush by playing the guitar or performing in a band.
Ironically, it takes "work" to "play" at guitar - but as you get better, it feels more like "play" than "work". Then, after you’ve learned to play some chords and you’ve learned a song or two, the fun starts. At least, that is how it was for me when I started to take guitar lessons (when I was ten)! I first learned three basic chords that could be used to play a variety of easy guitar songs. That is a good way to start – you’ll feel that you accomplished something. Learning a few chords will help you a lot - try learning G, D, and C chords to start. There are so many songs you can play on the guitar with just those three basic chords.
Online videos teach you various things such as tuning the guitar and changing strings (and look up the parts of the guitar – it’s good to learn that). There are beginner lessons on videos that can teach about guitar chords.
Is it hard to learn a guitar song?
When I learned to play guitar, I had a guitar teacher - and guitar books taught me songs and chords. But that was before the Internet (I know - a long time ago) and today there are so many other options to find guitar lessons for beginners. I know that the online lessons are good. Some things haven't changed, one of the fasted ways to become a guitar player is by learning an easy song. The second song you learn will be far easier than that first one!
What should you look for in a guitar?
Lots of beginning guitar players start with an acoustic guitar and many start with what is considered a classical guitar. Here is an article that shows the three main types of guitars. A basic difference between those two types of guitars is the kind of strings - acoustic guitars have steel strings and classical (or folk) guitars have nylon strings. Believe me, the nylon strings are much easier to start out with because they don’t hurt your fingers as much!
There are benefits to learning to play on either kind of guitar. Starting with an electric guitar is important if you plan to play in a rock band. Acoustic guitars are great for most kinds of music, you'll need a classical guitar if you plan to play Spanish or Flamenco music, though.
So, go and buy yourself a guitar, just don't get one that is made of plastic or is really cheap. Make sure you hear the guitar played first. If you have to get someone in the guitar store to play it, then do that. When you go to a guitar store, take a friend who plays guitar with you. Just start by finding one easy song you can learn to play. You will become your own guitar hero!
