Apart from the 3 and a half years he spent at Phillips, he lived for the majority of of his life in a tiny house on Utopia Parkway with his mother as well as his ill brother.
He was cautious with unknown people. This led him to segregate himself and become a self-taught artist. Cornell became a highly regarded painter towards the last part of his career, but remained out of the spotlight.
Cornell's most quality artworks were encased assemblages crafted from found items. In 1969, this collage artist handed a collection of both his own motion pictures and the works of others to Anthology Film Archives located in New York City. Cornell's fragmentary fantasy world is magnificently explored in an excellent show which convincingly argues that his contribution to the art of assemblage and collage had been enormous.
